BACKGROUND
The Napa County Fire Hazard Abatement Ordinance requires property owners located in the unincorporated areas of the County to maintain a defensible space under the Napa County Defensible Space Guidelines. The Defensible Space Inspector (DSI) classification has been created to assist in recruitment efforts and to accurately reflect the duties the position is responsible for. DSIs will be responsible for the inspection of each parcel in unincorporated Napa County on a three-year cycle. DSIs will work with homeowners to understand the requirements and advise on pathways toward compliance. DSIs will also work with those who are not in compliance in partnership with Code Compliance Officers to develop a compliance plan by way of homeowner investment or legal action. The requested action is to add the newly created classification to the Table and Index of Classes only. Any request for positions will include cost and a request for resources.

Discretionary justification:
The DSI classification was created as the appropriate classification to conduct inspections to ensure compliance with Napa County Defensible Space Guidelines.

Consequences if not approved:
The appropriate classification will not be available to perform seasonal inspection work to ensure compliance and reduce fire hazards.
