EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 1963, President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizens Month, encouraging the nation to pay tribute in some way to older people across the country. The theme for this year's celebration is "Age Out Loud." Older Americans Month creates the opportunity to raise awareness about important issues facing older adults. The theme this year is intended to give aging a new voice - one that reflects what today's older adults have to say about aging.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
The proclamation designates the month of May as "Older Americans Month" in Napa County. Older adults in Napa County and throughout the nation are an increasing population with evolving needs. Older adults are a vital part of our community, and entitled to dignified, independent lives free from fears, myths, and misconceptions about aging. The increasing number of "baby boomers" reaching traditional retirement age highlights the need for increased support of older adults. The purpose of this proclamation is to call upon Napa County residents and interested groups to observe the month with appropriate ceremonies and activities that promote awareness of Older Americans. With this proclamation, we hope to shine a light on many important trends. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities.
