body

BACKGROUND
The Fiscal Year 2024-25 Recommended Budget included $630,000 for one Type VI Engine. The County Fire Department requests authorization to purchase the one new apparatus from Golden State Fire Apparatus/Pierce Manufacturing without securing competitive bids. The apparatus will replace County Engine # 88107.

The Department has established Pierce brand engines as standard firefighting equipment. The engines have proven to be more reliable and less expensive to maintain than other manufactures' engines. Service records indicate that the Pierce engines have fewer maintenance problems and, consequently, fewer out-of-service hours and maintenance costs. Standardizing equipment enables the Department to standardize the training to increase efficiencies during emergency operations and standardize maintenance software and required equipment.

Requested Actions:
1. Approve a waiver of competitive bidding requirement and provide a sole source award to Golden State Fire Apparatus for the purchase of one new Pierce Type VI Engine in the amount of $630,000 pursuant to County Ordinance Code section 2.36.090 due to technical compatibility requirements.
