BACKGROUND
Sheriff's Office implemented its K-9 program in the 1960's. Sheriff's Office K-9 Units are assigned a myriad of tasks, such as drug enforcement, search and rescue, criminal apprehension, bomb detection and public relations. Sheriff's Office K-9 units have proven to be a successful and important law enforcement tool that can serve as a deterrent and deescalate a situation through their presence alone. In 2023, Sheriff's Office K-9's were deployed 118 times during patrol operations. There were 57 narcotic deployments and 61 patrol deployments. Of the 61 patrol deployments, a total of 66 people were found as a result. Some of these deployments resulted in multiple suspects being apprehended at once.
One of the reasons the Sheriff's Office K-9 program is successful is due to the training provided by CJ's Police K-9's. The head trainer and owner, Chip Johnson, has been providing California POST mandated K-9 training, K-9 working dogs, supplies, boarding, and other related services to the Sheriff's Office for over 17 years. With over 22 years of experience in K-9 training, Chip Johnson has developed a K-9 training philosophy that focuses on having a well-adjusted dog that is safe around the public and children but can be effectively deployed for apprehension purposes. In addition, Chip Johnson has demonstrated the unique ability to match dogs and handlers based on personality, behavior, and temperament.
