BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
Presentation of a proclamation to Kara Vernor, Executive Director of Napa County Bicycle Coalition, declaring May 2022 as “Bike Month” and May 20, 2022 as “Bike to Wherever Day” in Napa County.
Since 1956, the month of May has been recognized across the United States as “National Bike Month,” with community-sponsored celebrations as a means to make our cities and towns more bike friendly for everyone.
Pre-pandemic, “Bike to Work Day (BTWD)” was a celebration of bicycles as a fun and healthy way to get to work, as well as an opportunity for those who don’t usually bike commute to try it out. It was also a time to advocate for improved bicycle infrastructure and safety.
During the pandemic and going forward, far fewer people were biking to work, so the event evolved into “Bike to Wherever Day” to encourage riders to get out and pedal to do errands, meet friends outdoors, and for some to get to work safely and easily. Now in 2022, as some people are returning to their offices/places of work, “Bike to Wherever Day” will continue as we embrace the new hybrid model of work and life. During the month of May, no matter where you need to go, we encourage members of the community to pedal to errands, visit friends and family, commute to work, and ride recreationally.
