REPORT BY: Erin Corry, Staff Services Analyst II
SUBJECT: Amendment No. 2 to Agreement 220022B with CJ’s Police K-9’s

RECOMMENDATION
title
Approve and authorize Amendment No. 2 of Agreement No. 220022B with CJ’s Police K-9’s for canine (K-9) and K-9 handler-related services. (Fiscal Impact: $90,000 Expense; General Fund; Budgeted; Discretionary)
body
BACKGROUND
Sheriff’s Office implemented its K-9 program in the 1960’s. Sheriff’s Office K-9 Units are assigned a myriad of tasks, such as drug enforcement, search and rescue, criminal apprehension, bomb detection and public relations. Sheriff’s Office K-9 units have proven to be a successful and important law enforcement tool that can serve as a deterrent and de-escalate a situation through their presence alone.
Sheriff’s Office K-9 program is successful due to the training provided by CJ’s Police K-9’s. The head trainer and owner, Chip Johnson, has been providing California POST mandated K-9 training, K-9 working dogs, supplies, boarding, and other related services to the Sheriff’s Office for 19 years. Two new K-9s were purchased earlier this fiscal year due to the retirement of two K-9s has resulted in additional training & supply expenses, causing our currently encumbered funds to be insufficient.
Requested Action:
Approve and authorize Amendment No. 2 of Agreement No. 220022B with CJ’s Police K-9’s to increase the maximum compensation rate to $85,000 for the provision of K-9 supplies and handler-related services.
